Sometimes It's Best To...

1. The last meal I had at a restaurant was dimsum, beef hofan, yang chow fried rice, and assorted Chinese cold cuts.

2. Infidelity is something I intensely dislike.

3. The full moon makes you do crazy things (or at least gives you an excuse to).

4. "Oh, my gas abelgas!" is one of my favorite local expressions.

Tick Tock Goes The Marrying Clock

Saw this on my cousin Phimie's site. You tick the boxes and add them all up in the end. The sum you get is supposedly your optimum age to get hitched. I think it's just a bunch of bull lol, but let's give it a try anyway. Looks like fun. :)

[/] I know how to make a cup of coffee. I know how to make myself a cup of coffee. But somehow I almost always screw up everybody else's. I get 1/2 a point for that, I guess.
[x] I keep track of dates using a calendar. Calendar on the wall, planner, post-its -- you name it.
[ ] I own more than one credit card.
[ ] I know how to change the oil in my car/bike. Erm, I know how to go to the shop and ask for an oil change, but I don't think that counts.
[/] I do my own laundry. Only when I travel.
[x] I vote every election. Local and national elections ever since I turned 18.
[x] I can cook for myself.
[ ] I think politics is exciting. As exciting as, well, politicians. So, no.
[ ] I balance my checkbook.
[ ] My parents have better things to say than my friends.
[/] I show up for school/college/work everyday early. Generally, I do, but I don't really need to report to work right now, so that gets 1/2 a point, too.
[x] I always carry a pen in my pocket/purse. Pen, pad, house -- it's all in there.
[/] I've never gotten a detention. This is tricky because detention doesn't really exist in these parts. Sure, they call your attention, ask you to stay after school, have your parents come in the next day, but there's just no name for it around here. That just makes you "trouble."
[ ] I have never smoked a cigarette.
[ ] I have never gotten completely trashed.
[ ] I have forgotten my own birthday at least once.
[x] I like to take walks by myself.
[x] I've watched talk shows.
[x] I know what 'credibility' means without looking it up.
[x] I drink coffee at least once a week.
[x] I know how to do the dishes.
[x] I can count 1 to 10 in another language.
[/] When I say I'm going to do something I do it.
[x] My parents trust me. They better!
[ ] I can mow the lawn. For the right price, I can.
[x] I can make adults laugh without being stupid.
[ ] I remember to water the plants. Mother Nature does that for me.
[x] I study when I have to.
[/] I pay attention at school/college. No one ever does 100% of the time.
[ ] I remember to feed my pets. Mother Nature does that for me.
[x] I can spell 'experience' without looking it up
[ ] I work out on a regular basis.
[/] I clean up my own mess. Most of the time, I do.
[ ] The people at Gloria Jeans know me by name. Coffee Bean, thanks!
[/] My favorite kind of food is takeout. I like it, but it's not my favorite. I like home-cooked just as much.
[x] I have gained weight since middle/high school. Too bad I could only tick this once.
[ ] The first thing I do when I wake up is get caffeine.
[/] I can't go out of the store without getting something I don't need. Guilty.
[ ] I understand political jokes the first time they are said. I'm not even gonna try.
[x] I can type quickly. Too bad I could only tick this once.
[ ] I have realized that the weather forecast changes every hour. I just look out the window; I never really think about it.
[ ] My only friends are from my place of employment.
[x] I have been to a Tupperware party. Tupperware, paper, foil, Saran -- yep.
[/] I have realized that no one will take you seriously unless you are over the age of 25 and have a job. Sometimes, I believe this.
[/] I have more bills than I can pay. I'll live.
[x] Most of my friends are older than I am. Oh, yeah.
[/] I can say no to staying out all night. I can say yes, too.
[x] I use the internet every day. Pretty much everyday, yep.
[ ]My wardrobe hasn't changed for a while. I'm a serial shopper. My wardrobe expands everyday.
[x] I can read a book and actually finish it.

That means, my marrying age is...26. OK, this is bull. lol

10 On Tuesday: Best Movie Villains

It was a little hard narrowing it down to just ten, but here are my 10 favorite villains in movies...

1. Denzel Washington as Alonzo in Training Day (2001).

2. Kathy Bates as Annie Wilkes in Misery (1990).

3. Ray Fiennes as Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter series.

4. Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestley in The Devil Wears Prada (2006).

5. Rebecca de Mornay as Peyton Flanders in The Hand That Rocks The Cradle (1992).

6. Nicolas Cage and John Travolta as Castor Troy in Face/Off (1997).

7. Robert Englund as Freddie Krueger in the A Nightmare On Elm Street series. Come to think of it, I think he's responsible for my insomnia!@#$%

8. Erika Christensen as Madison Bell in Swimfan (2002). Grrr, I hated her with a passion.

9. Kevin Spacey as John Doe in Se7en (1995) and Kaiser Soze in The Usual Suspects (1995).

10. Close tie between Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith in The Matrix series and James Earl Jones as the voice of Darth Vader in the Star Wars series -- two of the most chilling voices ever.

TMI Tuesday: Meet Jekyll Aberdeen

1. What is your favorite song to have sex to? Lemme think...

2. What is your vision of hell? Steep mountains, pits of fire, demons, torture.

3. In the film made of your life, who will play you? If it were up to me, I'd say Drew Barrymore, Liv Tyler, Anne Hathaway, or Megan Fox. You know how big shot producers are -- they always have final say.

4. What is the one thing you most urgently need to tell your mom? "Mom, hurry up!"

5. What will be carved onto your tombstone?

Bonus: What is your drag name (which would be, first name: the name of your first pet; last name: the name of the street you grew up on)? Jekyll Aberdeen. Great.

A Bowl Of Thai Goodness

There are a lot of things I love about Thailand, but their spicy shrimp soup has got to be one of the top contenders.

ต้มยำกุ้ง or Tom Yam Grung (or Tom Yam Kung, pronounced in English as Tom Yam Goong) is a local delicacy broth made with prawns, mushrooms, vegetables, lemongrass, and other spices. I've searched high and low for authentic Tom Yam soup here in Manila, but nothing came close to the real thing. Sure, they tasted good, but something was still lacking. If you've tasted the real deal, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.

What was the secret ingredient? I suppose there is none. It's just that the ingredients were locally grown and harvested. I'd imagine spices and flavors are unique for every country.

During my last trip, I bought quite a few packs of Tom Yam paste so I could make a decent bowl on my own. I haven't used it still. But I thought I'd share the recipe with you all and we could all make a nice bowl of soup from scratch. Reminder: don't leave out the optional ingredients if you really want to stay true to the taste.

Tom Yam Grung
(Spicy Prawn Soup with Mushrooms & Lemongrass)

1 lb prawns (shelled and de-veined)
1/2 cup straw mushrooms
2-3 cups water
3-4 cloves of crushed garlic
1/2 tbs finely chopped ginger
1/2 tbs lemon zest
6 tbs lemon juice
6 tbs fish sauce
1 stalk fresh lemongrass
1/4 cup cilantro (also known as coriander leaves)
1 tsp sugar
ground chili or red chili flakes
coconut milk (optional)

*Instead of regular fish sauce, you can use nahm phrik pla or Thai spicy paste in fish sauce. Instead of ginger and lemon zest, you can use kaffir lime leaves.

Mix garlic, ginger, lemon zest, lemon juice, fish sauce, lemongrass, and sugar in a bowl. Add as much chili as you want. The spicier the better. :) This mixture can be prepared ahead to save on time.

Put prawns and water in a pot and wait for it to boil. Then add the mushrooms and the spice mixture. Wait for it until it boils again. Switch heat to low and serve in small bowls. Add a few cilantro leaves for garnish. And voila!

OK, now I'm hungry.

Hey, Shorty!

How would your friend describe you to someone who has never seen you?
5-foot short, chubby, long black hair, fair skin, big brown eyes, fashionable, and a bit loud. That's the short version.

Do you trust anyone to protect you? Who, and why?
Well, my folks -- they've done a pretty good job so far. There's my brother G-3 -- he's my gentle giant, but to an assailant he looks like he's capable of anything; that should keep them away. Then there's my boyfriend Obie, of course -- I know he'd save me if he could. Oh, and my friend Wanwan -- she can kick serious @ss.

If you died or went missing, who would miss you?
My boyfriend, family, and friends would (they better or I'm gonna come back from the dead and haunt them).

Creative Adventure: The Cruise Lift

While on a Caribbean cruise, I take the elevator to get to my room. Accidentally pressing the wrong button, the elevator door closes and then opens and I find myself...
staring at a beautiful stranger across the hall.

Being the curious type, I leave the elevator and start to walk down the hallway and soon come to a...
surprising halt when I realize I was staring at myself, or at least someone who looked a hell lot like me. But with fangs.

Now worried, I turn around to go back to the elevator when I suddenly see...
the elevator operator Bob inviting me back inside the box. He's all like, "miss, this isn't your floor, come back inside and let me take you to your room."

A little relieved and laughing to myself I realize that I...
just took a bunch of hallucinogenic drugs and I just imagined the whole thing.

You Know You're Old When...

Happy 8-8-08, everyone!

1. You know you're old when you see a teenager and go "ah, kids today..."

2. My heart is divided between some personal desires and duty to family.

3. Money is what I need RIGHT NOW!

4. I have felt the ground shake beneath me, I have known the depths of sorrow and loss.

5. Gah, won't these people just relax.

6. Forgive as soon as you can!

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to picking up sushi trays, pigging out, and getting sloshed at a friend's going-away party, tomorrow my plans include a little get-together with friends from Church and going out with my boyfriend at night, and Sunday, I want to eat everything in sight because I start to fast (cleansing diet) on Monday!

Philippine AllStars: Hip Hop, Hurrah

The Philippine AllStars took home the gold at this year's World Hip Hop Dance Championships in Vegas. You can't see me, but I'm actually doing the dance of joy right now. ;) (Another reason to celebrate? This is my 300th post. Hurrah!)

The entire video is just awesome. But I especially loved the "reverse catapult" (0:40 on the clock), the "raise-n-drop" (0:44), and the "sausage roll" (0:59). Reminder: I have absolutely no authority over anything hip hop; I took the liberty of naming the moves only for easy reference. The AllStars are welcome to use them anytime though.

Have a little look-see, you'll surely be amazed. I know I was. Mabuhay ang Pinoy (at Pinay)!

10 On Tuesday: Events That Should Be In The Olympics

I'm uncertain if some of these are not already in the Olympics. I do think most are recognized as sports by the International Olympics Committee, but not as actual Olympic events. So, I think all of these should be included anyway. Why? Well, why not?

1. Bowling. Remember my freak bowling accident that left me in crutches for weeks? If people get injured playing a sport, I think that's reason enough to consider it in the Olympics.

2. Surfing.

3. [American] Football. The way I see it, if American Football was in the Olympics, people like me who live all the way over here would have a better appreciation of the game. You say football, and all we hear/see/play is soccer.

4. Marco Polo. In an Olympic-sized pool. Sounds like fun already.

5. Tug of War. I don't understand why they even pulled out the sport in the first place (pardon the pun).

6. Skateboarding. And other Xtreme Sports while you're at it.

7. Sumo Wrestling.

8. Booby Trap Relay. Like what they do on American Gladiators or Takeshi's Castle. It can't just be serious all the time, you know? People also want to be entertained. Immensely.

9. Cup Stacking. Also known as sport stacking or speed stacking, is an actual sport, believe it or not. The new world records of fastest cups stacked in the Cycle and 3-3-3 divisions are done by the reigning WSSA World Sport Stacking Champion, 10-year-old Filipino Steven Purugganan, who's also the 3-6-3 champ.

10. Twister. Where everyone gets a gold medal.

Big Love

The head-locks, the pinning-against-the-wall (or door), the break-ups-and-make-ups, the silly yet endearing nicknames, the running-afters, the Eskimo kisses, the holding, the falling. Here's a little tribute to one of the most riveting love stories of my time...

Carrie & Big, Forever & Always

Little Shop Of Honors

Using no more than 10 nouns, and ONLY nouns, describe yourself. Emotion, music, optimism, laughter, strength, spirituality, endurance, storm, rainbow, forgiveness.

If you owned your own store, what would you sell? I'd sell clothes, bags, shoes, and other accessories. There's also going to be a coffee shop in one corner of the store with a mini-library next to it.

If you were to name the most comforting thing for you to hold in your hands, what would it be? Good friends. Well, it's either that or cake.

Filling In The Blanks

Found this on The Daily Meme and I thought it looked like fun. That, and I didn't know what to blog about today exactly. So, before I go back to my rainy morning, cold coffee, half-full (optimism is key) jar of Nutella, and One Tree Hill season 5 marathon, here's my very first Friday Fill-In:

1. If I could travel back in time, I'd go to the beginning.

2. Give me money or give me a job that pays good money.

3. I am listening to Boyce Avenue right now.

4. Somewhere, someone is thinking, "somewhere, someone is thinking..."

5. I'll always be grateful.

6. My idea of a good time includes friends -- or funny people, at least.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to going out and getting wasted, tomorrow my plans include whatever my boyfriend's got planned for us, and Sunday, I want to make up for all the lost sleep I've accumulated this passed week!
